Two musical giants, conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen and pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, explore the music and an artistic partnership that inspires and excites them both, across four programmes brimming with music of invention, beauty and transcendence.

Inspirations features some of the most iconic moments in orchestral music: the hammer blows of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony; the sunrise in Richard Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra, the swirl of Debussy’s La Mer; and the grandiosity of Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ Concerto.

Woven throughout the series are bold and revolutionary scores from the 20th and 21st century: Ligeti’s astonishing Piano Concerto, Boulez’s Notations, in two versions, and two premieres: Musique Funebre, a recently discovered work by Igor Stravinsky; and a new piece for four horns and orchestra by UK composer Tansy Davies – to be performed by the horn section of the Philharmonia Orchestra.
