The brilliant young Slovakian conductor Juraj Valcuha conducts the Philharmonia in a performance of two much-loved works from his region of Europe. The first is one of the most vivid movements from Smetana’s Ma Vlast (My Country), tracing the course of the River Vltava from its source. Later we hear Dvořák’s cheery Eighth Symphony, which draws its inspiration from Bohemian folk music and village life.
Former BBC Young Generation Artist François-Frédéric Guy, who has quickly gained an international reputation as a pianist of immense authority and superlative technique, plays Beethoven’s lyrical Fourth Piano Concerto.
