Brahms Violin Concerto
Sibelius Symphony No. 5
Brahms synthesised the sounds of a solo instrument with music on a symphonic scale in his Violin Concerto, which virtuoso Bronislav Huberman characterised memorably as ‘a concerto for violin against orchestra – and the violin wins!’ In the second half, Sibelius's Fifth Symphony, which was completed just in time for his fiftieth birthday celebrations and climaxes in the finale’s indelible horn calls, was likened by one musicologist to Thor smashing down his hammer.
