Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1

--interval--

Stravinsky The Firebird

Tonight features one of the most popular piano concertos in the repertoire, Tchaikovsky's First; a wild Cossack-ride through virtuoso territory that leaves audiences breathless in its wake. Incredibly, when Tchaikovsky first showed it to his mentor Nikolay Rubinstein, he was told that only ‘two or three pages’ were worth preserving! In the second half, this concert explores the Franco-Russian connection in the early 1900s, epitomised by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. The ballet music Stravinsky composed for Diaghilev was inspired by an exotic Russian legend, The Firebird and inspires an orchestral score of unmatched luxuriant colour.
