Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending

Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5, Emperor

Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 in E minor

Violinist Esther Yoo opens tonight's concert with Vaughan William's The Lark Ascending - a yearning, romantic utterance that brilliantly evokes the song of the lark and contains an eloquent cadenza that wistfully suggests the beauty of nature. Next to take centre stage will be Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire with Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, famous for its spellbinding slow movement and the imperial majesty of its three opening chords. Finally, Ashkenazy conducts Tchaikovksy's brooding Symphony No. 5, which opens with a motif that Tchaikovsky himself suggested signified his "complete resignation before fate".
