Vladimir Ashkenazy conductor
Sibelius, Symphony No. 5
Violinist Esther Yoo opens tonight's concert with Vaughan William's The Lark Ascending - a yearning, romantic utterance that brilliantly evokes the song of the lark and contains an eloquent cadenza that wistfully suggests the beauty of nature. Next to take centre stage will be Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire with Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, famous for its spellbinding slow movement and the imperial majesty of its three opening chords. Lastly, Ashkenazy leads the Orchestra in a performance of Sibelius's Fifth Symphony, which climaxes in the finale's indelible horn calls, likened by one musicologist to Thor smashing down his hammer.
