Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending

Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5, Emperor

Brahms Symphony No. 1

Violinist Esther Yoo opens tonight's concert with Vaughan William's The Lark Ascending - a yearning, romantic utterance that brilliantly evokes the song of the lark and contains an eloquent cadenza that wistfully suggests the beauty of nature. Next to take centre stage will be Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire with Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, famous for its spellbinding slow movement and the imperial majesty of its three opening chords. Finally, Ashkenazy leads the Orchestra in a performance of Brahms's First Symphony, a work which Brahms made the world wait 43 years for because the composer felt so intimidated by Schumann’s prediction that he was the man destined to ‘take over the mantle of Beethoven'.
