‘The reputation the famous F major has acquired makes me want to cancel all my engagements!’ So successful was Brahms’s Third Symphony that the composer feared the weight of expectation in its wake. The shortest of Brahms’s four symphonies, it is reflective and yearning in tone, in contrast to the relative sobriety of the First and the pastoral charm of the Second. Here it is preceded by Beethoven’s concise yet suitably statuesque tone poem Coriolan and followed by the groundbreaking Violin Concerto. This concert marks the Philharmonia London début of charismatic young German conductor David Afkham.

It is a great honour for the Philharmonia Orchestra to give this concert to mark what would have Maestro Kurt Sanderling's 100th birthday
