Esa-Pekka Salonen conductor

Berlioz Requiem (Grande Messe des Morts)

Esa-Pekka Salonen opens the new season with Berlioz’s vast Requiem (Grande Messe des Morts). ‘If I were threatened with the burning of all of my works except one,’ Berlioz once confessed, ‘it is for the Requiem that I would beg for mercy.’ The great Frenchman unleashes an awesome range of expression, from the merest vocal and instrumental whispers to the all-engulfing Tuba mirum’s four pairs of rumbling timpani and four additional brass ensembles.

The Philharmonia Orchestra and Esa-Pekka Salonen will be dedicating tonight's concert to the memory of Lorin Maazel (1930 - 2014)

This evening’s concert is supported by a syndicate of donors and trustees of the Philharmonia Trust; Sir Sydney and Lady Lipworth, Daan and Maggie Knottenbelt, Geoff and Val Richards and Urs and Heidi Reist-Jöhl
