Elgar claims to have begun conceiving The Apostles (1903) as a schoolboy, which depicts the twelve disciples of Jesus and their reactions to their calling, as well as Jesus’ preaching, miracles, crucifixion, resurrection and final ascension.

Judas, traditionally known for his betrayal of Jesus, is sympathetically portrayed in The Apostles, reasoning that through his treachery, Judas hoped to compel Jesus to fulfil his destiny and prove himself the Son of God.
