Britten War Requiem
‘My subject is war, and the pity of war.’
Three Choirs Festival 2014 marks the centenary of World War I with a performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem.
Built around nine World War I poems by Wilfred Owen and extracts from the Latin Requiem Mass, Britten’s War Requiem was commissioned to mark the 1962 re-consecration of Coventry Cathedral following its obliteration in World War II in 1940.
Britten wanted his work to be one of unity and so his Requiem was duly scheduled to be premièred by soloists from England, Russia and Germany. Britten’s War Requiem juxtaposes traditional expressions of suffering against a personal plea for reconciliation, denouncing all war and uniting nations.
