Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto is part of his neoclassical oeuvre, and was composed for Samuel Dushkin, an American violinist. The piece was used by George Balanchine as the music for two ballets, the first of which was premièred in 1941, two years before Bartók composed his Concerto for Orchestra. Bartók’s innovative work combines the folk melodies of his native Hungary that the composer spent so many years researching, with his exciting and fresh harmonies, and its unusual title is due to his treatment of single instruments or groups of instruments in a soloistic manner. The concert opens with Benjamin’s Dance Figures, to celebrate his 50th birthday year.
