Paavo Järvi conductor

Kirill Gerstein piano

Written at the height of a repressive Soviet regime, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony was famously, and moreover, ambiguously dubbed by one journalist as “a Soviet artist’s creative answer to just criticism”. Rachmaninov’s fiendishly difficult Third Piano Concerto is tonight played by Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein who the Observer describes as “one of the hottest guns in the game … superb”.

6.15-6.50pm Kirill Gerstein in conversation with John Florance in the DMH
auditorium. Free.
