Tchaikovsky, Andante Cantabile from String Quartet No. 1 op 11 arr. for Cello and String Orchestra
This concert revolves around a theme of fairy-tales and fantasy, from Dukas’s tale of a wayward sorcerer’s apprentice to Prokofiev’s Cinderella, which captures the enchanted world of Cinderella, her Fairy Godmother and those fateful 12 chimes at midnight. Between these works, Dutch cellist Pieter Wispelwey showcases Tchaikovsky’s only major work for cello.
“[Wispelwey] not only sings, he speaks and whispers with his instrument”
