Monday 6 Jan 2014, 8.00pm
Philharmonie, Essen

Concert

Vladimir Ashkenazy conductor

Vadim Repin violin

Tchaikovsky opened his Fifth Symphony with a motif that the composer himself suggested signified his "complete resignation before fate". Alongside, Vadim Repin performs Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, which was written from a Swiss resort on the shores of Lake Geneva, where Tchaikovsky had gone to recuperate from the depression brought on by his disastrous marriage to Antonina Miliukova.
