Autumn-Winter 2008/09

Following the sensational success of Stravinsky’s first ballet The Firebird, Diaghilev persuaded him to write an even more daring and exotic work. The result was the brilliant burlesque score that animates the puppet Petrushka, who in the composer’s words is ‘suddenly endowed with life, exasperating the patience of the orchestra.’ In this evening’s concert it is performed alongside the world première of a piano concerto by an extraordinary young composing talent, Dai Fujikura, whose music ‘speaks in a series of uncannily sharp images, floating in a pulseless musical space, held together by a riveting intuitive logic’.
