Berg | Wozzeck (concert performance) |
When Berg saw the 1914 premiere of Georg Büchner’s play Woyzeck, the composer knew he had found the inspiration for his first opera. Influenced greatly by the horrors of the First World War, Wozzeck is a profound piece that expresses, with cinematic immediacy, the torment of a simple soldier brutalised by a repressive system. With its dissonant score, complex structure and a mounting atmosphere of oppressiveness, this is undoubtedly Berg’s most expressionist work but one which cannot fail to move the listener, stirred by the plight of the opera’s eponymous hero.
