‘The symphony is a world’ Mahler proclaimed to Sibelius, and few composers have written music that conjures up as vast a range of musical imagery as his First Symphony. From the evocative opening, marked ‘like a sound of nature’, to a funeral march based on Frère Jacques and the sounds of military and folk bands it is a work of enormous power and breadth. Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C, offering a virtuoso opening movement and an extremely affecting, melodious Adagio, shall also be performed.
