Gala concert in support of the Road Victims Trust
Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, suffused with a Mediterranean spirit, is played in this concert by one of the world's finest classical guitarists, Australian-born Craig Ogden. A different Spanish flavour comes in de Falla's Three Cornered Hat Suites, from a ballet depicting an elderly local magistrate's failed attempt to seduce the miller's lovely wife. From Spain we move to the States, featuring three central, yet distinctive, American composers of the 1930's. Barber is represented with his serenely beautiful Adagio; Ives by his existential The Unanswered Question; and Gershwin by his contemporarily urban An American in Paris, complete with car horns. This concert marks the début for Han-Na Chang conducting the Philharmonia, perhaps better known as an internationally renowned cellist.
