We regret to announce that Denis Matsuev is unable to perform this evening due to a foot injury. The Philharmonia is grateful to Nikolai Demidenko who will perform tonight at very short notice.
Tchaikovsky was uncharacteristically proud of his final work, the Pathétique symphony, declaring it to be 'my very best, and in particular, the most sincere of all my compositions'. More than 100 years after his death, it remains a towering achievement, anguished and highly emotional; and a lasting monument to a tragic genius. In this evening’s programme it is performed alongside Rachmaninov’s extraordinary Third Piano Concerto, one of the most difficult works in the piano repertoire, requiring both phenomenal technique and exceptional lyricism.
