Whilst Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.1 carries many of the distinctive features of an 18th Century work, it also possesses radical developments that mark the advances spearheaded by the composer. It is an infectiously buoyant piece, the soloist impishly toying with the grand, belligerent orchestra. The skittishness of the piano in the classic Rondo finale, creates an almost chase like sensation between the soloist and orchestra, and excellently counterpoints the serene Largo at the centre of the concerto. Replete with characteristic Beethoven touches, the Pastoral Symphony is a highly melodic work that lyrically evokes the countryside the composer so admired. “You ask me where my ideas come from” he once noted, “they come to me in the open air, in the woods whilst walking, in the silence of the night, early in the morning”. The Pastoral Symphony, with its unambiguously bucolic movement titles, is the composer’s attempt to set these sounds and scenes in notes on paper. Beethoven’s Namensfeier Overture completes the programme.
