Rachmaninov's powerful Third Symphony was composed some thrity years after its predecessor. It is often said to be his most expressively Russian symphony, especially in the dance rhythms of its finale. The traditional Dies Irae melody, the hallmark of so much of Rachmaninov's output, features once again, and also appears in the mysterious Isle of the Dead. Sibelius' ever-popular Violin Concerto completes the programme, and its polonaise finale adds a moment of levity to the occasion.
