This programme combines the music of Mozart and Mahler, in recognition of the significant influence that Mozart had on Mahler’s own life and works. In fact it is said that as Mahler lay on his deathbed, one of his final words was ‘Mozart’, an astonishing tribute from one master to another. Indeed there are passages in Mahler’s Fourth Symphony that display the radiant, yet restrained classical poise more often associated with his aforementioned hero, who’s graceful and elegant Piano Concerto No. 23 we also hear this evening.
