Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto, premièred with the composer as soloist in 1901, both secured Rachmaninov worldwide fame and established itself as one of the world’s most popular piano concertos. The Symphonic Dances, written in 1940, was Rachmaninov’s last major composition and it has come to be regarded as a summary of his life’s work. It includes quotes from his earlier compositions, ecclesiastical chant and the spectral tones of the Dies Irae, a leitmotif that haunts many of his late works.
This afternoon's concert is supported by the Principal Friends of the Philharmonia Orchestra.
