This evening’s concert is sponsored by the Principal Friends of the Philharmonia Orchestra.
This very special event presents a screening of Rupert Julian’s classic 1925 silent film of The Phantom of the Opera, accompanied by Carl Davis’s score performed live by the Philharmonia Orchestra. More than 80 years after its première, Lon Chaney’s extraordinary performance as the Phantom – a crazed escapee from Devil’s Island, formerly imprisoned in a torture chamber on the site of the Paris opera – still has the power to shock; and the film is also notable for its sumptuous set-piece scenes, including a masked Ball in which the Phantom appears as the Red Death on the Grand Stairway.
Please note that there will be no interval in this performance. The performance will run for 90 minutes and will end at approximately 4.30pm.
