Composed in 1868 while holidaying with his family in Denmark, Grieg’s Piano Concerto embodies the spirit of one of the happiest times in the composer’s life. But it would be more than two years, after he showed it to the great Franz Liszt, before it achieved public popularity. By comparison, Holst’s planetary masterwork hit the British music scene like a thunderbolt. Practically overnight he found himself elevated from a virtual unknown into a national celebrity.
