Julian Lloyd Webber, the most sought-after British cellist of his generation, makes this special appearance in Canterbury performing Elgar's Cello Concerto. The concerto sits among the greatest ever written for the cello, and conveys the impression, in the words of the Elgar scholar Michael Kennedy, of 'a man...finding solace in the beauty of music'. Martyn Brabbins, the foremost interpreter of English orchestral music, leads in the remainder of the concert, first with Vaughan Williams's Wasps overture - incidental music written for a production in Trinity College, Cambridge - and then Elgar's Symphony No. 1, a noble, ceremonious creation capturing the spirit of the Empire, and dedicated to an heroic General.
