Berlioz’ opera is based on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, and its lively and genial overture captures perfectly the teasing, light-hearted spirit of the play. Mozart’s double piano concerto is among his most inventive and engaging works, probably written for the composer to play with his sister. Elgar’s Variations are fond musical descriptions of close friends, varying from the serious ‘Nimrod’ (his publisher) to the romantic and delicate 'C.A.E.' (his wife), and finishing with an energetic and confident self-portrait.
