This concert is the culmination of the Philharmonia Orchestra’s composition project The Wild Hunt of the Summer Wind, linked to the Philharmonia’s Music of Today and City of Dreams: Vienna 1900-1935 series, with the performance of new works by three young composers: Evis Sammoutis, winner of last year’s Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize; Hannah Kendall, a MMus student at the Royal College of Music and Emma-Ruth Richards, a postgraduate student at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). Over the last nine months, our composers have been working on a short piece for tenor voice and chamber ensemble, using The Wild Hunt of the Summer Wind section of Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder as inspiration. Each composer has worked closely with our musicians – tenor Nathan Vale, conductor Richard Baker and Music of Today Artistic Director Julian Anderson – to develop their ideas, knowledge and practical experience.

Works by three young composers from UK conservatoires and universities, including Evis Sammoutis, winner of the Royal
Philharmonic Society composition prize, conclude this Music of Today season. To complement the Philharmonia Orchestra’s
City of Dreams: Vienna 1900–1935 series, we are offering each composer the chance to write a short composition based on sections of text from Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder. This is an exciting opportunity to hear the wide range of musical styles amongst the newest generations of composers today in the UK.
Presented by Julian Anderson in conversation with the composers.
This project is generously supported by the Royal Philharmonic Society.
