Mussorgsky’s ten vivid miniatures, a musical ‘exhibition’ written in tribute to his late friend the painter Victor Hartmann, were so compellingly pictorial in their original piano solo version that many composers have taken up the challenge of orchestrating them. Ravel’s is the most frequently performed orchestration, and although its feel is perhaps more French than Russian, it has become one of the most popular orchestral works in the repertoire. This evening it is conducted by one of Russia’s most fiery conductors, Alexander Lazarev, who is joined for Grieg’s Piano Concerto by the extraordinary young pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, who became the youngest ever winner of the Keyboard Final of the BBC Young Musician of Year Competition in 2004 at the age of just 11.
