Gustavo Dudamel & Nikolai Lugansky at the QEH
Thu 23 Feb 2006, 7:30pm
Queen Elizabeth Hall, London
Gustavo Dudamel conductor
Nikolai Lugansky piano
| Shostakovich | Festive Overture |
|---|---|
| Prokofiev | Piano Concerto No. 3 |
| Bernstein | Symphonic Dances from West Side Story |
| Revueltas | Sensemayá |
Sensemayá, one of the greatest works in Latin American music, tells the story of an encounter between an Indian and a serpent. It has been likened both to 'Mars' from Holst's The Planets, and Ravel's Bolero: dangerous, percussive music that builds from dark rhythms and works up to a fever pitch. Spectacle and virtuosity dominate the rest of this evening's music as well - starting with the raw energy of Prokofiev and Shostakovich in the first half, and culminating in the jazz and swing-influences of West Side Story.
