This spectacular feast of popular Russian masterpieces includes the prestigious world première of an animated film version of Prokofiev's much-loved classic Peter and the Wolf, which will be screened alongside a thrilling live performance of the orchestral score by the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Mark Stephenson. The stop-frame film (a technique popularised by the creators of Wallace and Gromit) is directed by Breakthru Films and directed by BAFTA winning director Suzie Templeton. It offers a fantastical and intriguing interpretation of the world famous story, with ingenious new twists woven into the original tale, which will entertain both adults and children alike.
The evening opens with Mussorgsky's colourful tour de force Pictures at an Exhibition, a collection of ten short movements inspired by an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Victor Hartmann. To complete the first half pianist Eduard Kunz performs Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, a bravura work bursting with exquisite melodies and luxuriant orchestral writing. Famously heard in the 1945 film Brief Encounter, this most popular piano concerto of all time has been immortalized ever since.
The concert is sponsored by Uniastrum Capital Limited.
