Prokofiev wrote his Fifth Symphony in a safe Russian haven at the height of World War II. He described it as ‘a symphony of the greatness of the human spirit, a song of praise of free and happy mankind’, and although the music itself is more ambiguous and ironic than this politically sanitised description suggests, it is a work of heroic proportion, and one that was immediately acclaimed both in Russia and overseas. It is performed this evening alongside two equally popular works: Verdi’s Overture, La Forza del Destino and Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, which is brought to vivid Russian life in the hands of the extraordinary Boris Giltburg.
