A Soldier's Tale

Igor Stravinsky based his allegorical Faustian tale on an old Russian folk story. It tells of a deserting soldier and a conniving devil who eventually possesses the soldier's very soul. The music is immediately accessible, charming yet full of wit and excitement. It mixes jaunty jazz and ragtime with Tango rhythms, military marches, a waltz, a chorale and haunting melodies steeped in the traditions of ancient Russian culture. It is a timeless work and is a sobering lesson for all cultures and all times. This performance of Stravinsky's masterpiece is preceded by smaller instrumental and chamber works from the same period.
