During the composition of his Fifth Symphony, Mahler married Alma Schindler; the symphony created a special bond between them and is dedicated to Alma. The highly charged outer movements are juxtaposed against the Adagietto, which was written before their marriage as a passionate declaration of Mahler’s love for his wife.
