An all-Beethoven evening, opening with Beethoven’s Overture from Egmont, a set of incidental pieces written to accompany Goethe’s play about the Spanish inquisition. Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony also has an extra-musical programme - originally titled ‘Recollections of a country life’, it celebrates the composer’s love of the countryside. From a musical depiction of arriving in the countryside, it passes through a scene by a brook, a country dance, and a storm before arriving at a joyful shepherd’s song in the finale. At the heart of the programme Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto, a work of symphonic proportions, promises to make an exciting London début for the 18-year-old American pianist Kit Armstrong.
