Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, suffused with a Mediterranean spirit, is played in this concert by one of the world’s finest classical guitarists, Australian-born Craig Ogden. A different Spanish flavour comes in de Falla’s Three-Cornered Hat Suites, from a ballet depicting an elderly local magistrate’s failed attempt to seduce the miller’s lovely wife. From Spain we then move to the States, featuring three central, yet distinctive, American composers of the 1930s. Barber is represented with his serenely beautiful Adagio; Ives by his existential The Unanswered Question; and Gershwin by his contemporarily urban An American in Paris, complete with car horns.
