Barber’s Violin Concerto, premièred in 1939, has become one of the most popular twentieth century concertos. Unashamedly Romantic in tone, the exquisite Adagio has a melancholic edge, with a fiery and technically demanding finale. A hugely evocative ballet suite, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet is the perfect interpretation of Shakespeare’s work, elegantly capturing the tragic lovers and their families’ rivalry.
