Beethoven composed his Seventh Symphony at a time of great financial worries and also during a period of intense unrequited love. The introduction to the first movement is the longest introduction to any of Beethoven's symphonies and it sets out the entire work in etiolated form. The emotions of the wide-ranging first three movements are swept away in the finale, which is based on a rhythmic peasant dance: the work ends in a spirit of pure joy. In the first half, Schumann's supremely eloquent Piano Concerto is performed by Antti Siirala – an intimate dialogue between piano and orchestra.
