Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Philharmonia’s Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, returns to De Montfort Hall for a programme featuring Beethoven’s Eroica. For some, this is considered the greatest symphony ever written, creating the foundations of Romanticism on the part of its unprecedented scale, gestures and depth of expression. The context in which the symphony was written reflects the work’s raw passion. On hearing that Napoleon had crowned himself emperor (the symphony’s original dedicatee), Beethoven famously tore the title page in half, scored out the offending name, and re-dedicated it to Prince Lobkowitz. In the first half, Schumann's supremely eloquent Piano Concerto is performed by Antti Siirala – an intimate dialogue between piano and orchestra.
