RachmaninovSymphony No. 2

Rachmaninov’s glorious Second Symphony was written shortly after the composer had escaped the 1905 Russian uprisings, and had settled in the calmer surroundings of Dresden. This historical context helps the listener to empathise with the sombre harmonies, deeply melancholic outpourings and spectacular Russian fire within. In contrast, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto is sunny and light-hearted, and was famously described by the celebrated violinist Joseph Joachim as ‘the heart's jewel’. On this occasion it is performed by the talented young German Arabella Steinbacher.
