The Soloists of the Philharmonia Orchestra's concert at the Palace Theatre starts a great rarity, a chamber work by Gustav Mahler. This will be followed by Vaughan Williams’ lyrical evocation of the English countryside, his Phantasy Quintet. In the second half the ensemble will perform Elgar’s profound Piano Quintet, composed just after the First World War and which some have seen as Elgar’s lament for the tragic loss of British youth in the trenches in the previous four years on the Western Front.
