A concert of fairytales and country scenes sets the magical scene for an early Christmas treat. Sir Charles Mackerras’ recording of Hansel und Gretel won the 2008 Grammy award for Best Opera Recording; so this performance of excerpts from Humperdinck’s enchanting re-telling of the Grimm Brothers’ fairytale is sure to be a special occasion. It is followed by Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, one of the composer’s few programmatic works: originally titled ‘Recollections of Country Life’ at its first performance, it begins with a description of arriving in the countryside, then passes through a scene by a brook, a country dance, and a thunderstorm, before arriving at the joyous finale.
This afternoon's concert is supported by the Friends of the Philharmonia Orchestra.
