Vaughan Williams A London Symphony
Elgar’s ‘Cockaigne’, an old nickname for London, or the ‘land of the Cockneys’, is in Elgar’s own words ‘cheerful and Londony – stout and steaky’. Forming a meditative prequel to Walton’s fiery Viola Concerto, Lawrence Power performs Julian Anderson's Prayer for Solo Viola. Finally, Vaughan Williams’s own portrait of London: a misty river Thames, Bloomsbury Square on a November afternoon, the busy, bright lights on the Strand and the echoing chimes of Westminster.
