Mahler’s Second Symphony was composed between 1888 and 1894, and requires a vast orchestra and chorus: fittingly, the symphony has a narrative programme describing enormous metaphysical questions. The first movement represents a funeral, and questions whether there is life after death; and after the following movements convey different philosophies over the meaning of life, the symphony ends joyously with a hope for everlasting life.
This evening's concert is a Charity Gala in aid of Life Action Trust.
