Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition (arr. Ravel)

The season opens with Tchaikovsky’s passionate and tragic overture. Rachmaninov’s Fourth Piano Concerto combines beautiful melodies and virtuoso excitement, and is unfairly overshadowed by the popularity of the composer’s other works. Rachmaninov’s famous Rhapsody is one of his finest pieces, twenty-four variations on Paganini’s well-known tune. Mussorgsky’s strongly characterised suite of musical pictures is best known in Ravel’s amazing orchestration. The gallery includes castles, chicks and catacombs, culminating in the unforgettable grandeur of the Great Gate of Kiev.
