So profound was the impact of Schubert’s Great Ninth Symphony that when Robert Schumann first encountered the manuscript he described it as ‘transporting us into a world where I cannot recall having ever been before’. The great Viennese tradition can also be savoured in Berg’s Violin Concerto, a heartbreaking lament composed to ‘the memory of an angel’.
