This evening’s concert opens with Liadov’s Kikimora, music that originally formed part of the unfinished opera Zoryushka. It tells the tale of its eponymous heroine, a strange creature brought up by a sorceress in the mountains whose head is as small as a thimble and whose body is as thin as a straw. The rest of the programme remains firmly in Russia, with two works by Rachmaninov: his glorious and ever-popular Second Piano Concerto, and his final major work, the Symphonic Dances, which combines rhythmic energy with his trademark sumptuous melodies.
