Out of the great Requiems of the nineteenth century, the overwhelming impression of Fauré's is one of peace and serenity transformed to joyous resignation. A work to comfort and reassure the faithful in the face of death, the odour of incense is undoubtedly thanks to his career as an organist and familiarity with church music.
