Smetana's effervescent overture to his well-known opera opens this concert in style. Dvořák's Violin Concerto, still not as well-known as his cello concerto, is a delightful piece. Its passionate first movement and song-like adagio are succeeded by a finale based on Czech folk dances. Tchaikovsky's symphony, composed on his return to Russia in 1888 after a successful European concert tour, uses motto themes in all four movements. The waltz feel of much of the first movement foreshadows the waltz which takes the place of the usual scherzo. The slow second section is pure Tchaikovskian melody and one of his most successful symphonic movements, while the finale is a blaze of power and orchestral colour.
